Complete Xiaohongshu Downloader Guide
A practical walkthrough — formats, use cases, common failures, and honest limits.
What Xiaohongshu (RedNote) Is
Xiaohongshu — known internationally as RedNote or Little Red Book — is a Chinese lifestyle platform that mixes social media with product reviews and shopping. It started as a beauty and skincare community and grew into a general-purpose discovery platform covering fashion, food, travel, home decor, fitness, and study aesthetics. The user base skews young, urban, and female, and the platform is one of the most influential consumer-trend engines in China.
A "note" on Xiaohongshu is usually a 1-to-9 image carousel with a long text caption — closer to a blog post than to a TikTok or Instagram caption. Video notes exist too, but the carousel format is the dominant content type and the one most users want to save. The platform's aesthetic is very strong, which is why outfit references, recipe screenshots, and home decor inspiration from RedNote often go viral on Western platforms months later.
Xiaohongshu URL Formats
Full URLs look like https://www.xiaohongshu.com/explore/64a1b2c3d4e5f6789012345 and come from the desktop web version or from copying a link in a browser. The mobile app produces shortened links that look like https://xhslink.com/AbCdEf and these resolve to full URLs. Both formats work with the downloader.
Some share text from the app includes an alphanumeric "笔记口令" (note code) or a long promotional sentence wrapped around the link. Extract just the URL portion. If you have only the note code without a URL, paste it as a search term on Xiaohongshu first to get the canonical link, then use that.
Multi-Image Carousel Posts
Most Xiaohongshu notes are image carousels with 2 to 9 photos. The downloader returns each image separately so you can keep the full set. This is especially valuable for outfit-of-the-day notes where the carousel often shows the same outfit from multiple angles, or for recipe notes where the carousel walks through the steps with annotated photos.
Filenames include sequential numbers so the order is preserved when you sort by name. If you are saving outfit references or recipes regularly, putting each note into its own folder (named after the original creator) is the easiest way to keep your archive useful months later. Carousel images can take quite a bit of storage at full resolution — 4-5 MB each is typical for high-quality photo posts.
Video Notes
Some Xiaohongshu creators post video content instead of carousels. These are usually short — 60 seconds or less — and follow a similar lifestyle aesthetic: makeup tutorials, recipe walkthroughs, room makeover time-lapses, "get ready with me" content. The download is a standard MP4 in whatever aspect ratio the creator uploaded (vertical 9:16 for phone-shot content, occasionally 1:1 or 16:9 for more produced material).
Audio is in Chinese for most native creators. If you need captions and the video does not have them burned in, third-party transcription tools like Whisper handle Mandarin reasonably well and can output English subtitles. Some creators add Chinese-to-English bilingual captions baked into the video, which is great when you find it.
Private Notes, Copyright, and Responsible Saves
Private notes — notes the creator restricted to specific followers or made invisible — cannot be downloaded. The tool only accesses content that is publicly visible without logging in. If a note requires you to follow the creator or be a verified user to view, the downloader sees the same restriction and returns an error.
For public notes, the images and videos belong to the original creator. Personal saving for inspiration is completely normal and what Xiaohongshu was built for. Stripping watermarks (where present) and reposting under your own name is not, and Xiaohongshu creators do report copycat accounts. The cleanest way to use content you found is to recreate the look yourself with credit, not to repost the original.
A useful habit when saving Xiaohongshu references is to also save a screenshot of the original post page that shows the creator handle, the post date, and the caption alongside the images. That way the source is documented even if the original note is later deleted or made private. Browser screenshot extensions and the iOS or Android full-page screenshot built-ins both handle this in one tap.
